LEGACIES OF J. D. GOMWALK CONTINUE TO INSPIRE GENERATIONS, SAYS UNIJOS VC DURING CONDOLENCE VISIT TO FAMILY

 

The University of Jos has reaffirmed that the enduring legacy of the Gomwalk family will continue to inspire generations of students and staff of the institution, as Management paid a condolence visit to the family over the passing of two of its distinguished members. 

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Tanko Ishaya stated this when he led a delegation of the University community to commiserate with the Gomwalk family on the death of wives of the late J.D. Gomwalk - former Military Governor of Plateau State: Mama Hanatu Joseph Dechi Gomwalk and Mama Azubah Joseph Dechi Gomwalk, who passed away on 18th November and 13th December 2025, respectively.

Speaking on behalf of the University’s Governing Council, Senate, Management, Staff and Students, the Vice-Chancellor described the losses as deeply painful, not only to the family but to the entire University of Jos community, given the historic contributions of the Gomwalk family to the growth and development of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor recalled that the late J.D. Gomwalk, former Military Governor of Benue-Plateau State, played a visionary role in the establishment of the University of Jos, a contribution that has continued to shape the institution’s identity and mission decades later. He noted that the foundation laid by the late leader has produced countless graduates who are contributing meaningfully to national and global development. Professor Tanko further highlighted the contributions of Professor Nenfort E. Gomwalk, the sixth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, whose leadership was instrumental in securing the University’s permanent site. According to him, this milestone remains a defining chapter in the institution’s history and a testament to the family’s unwavering commitment to education and public service.

He stressed that the values of service, integrity and visionary leadership associated with the Gomwalk name would continue to serve as a source of inspiration for present and future generations of students and Staff of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed its heartfelt sympathy to the family and offered special prayers for divine comfort, peace and strength during this difficult time.

Responding on behalf of the Gomwalk family, Professor Nenfort Gomwalk, expressed gratitude to the University for the visit. He admitted that the history of the University is incomplete without J. D Gomwalk. He thanked the VC for carrying on with the legacies of J. D. Gomwalk, and prayed for the continuous growth of the University.
