MUMPERA PROJECT OVERVIEW

AN OVERVIEW OF THE MUMPERA PROJECT

The Michigan-UniJos Mentored Program for Enhanced Research Administration (MUMPERA)

is targeted at training and mentoring new research administrators in Nigeria on NIAID/NIH grants management systems; support the establishment of grant management offices and training of twelve (12) administrators in 2 Local-in-country Universities of Health Sciences in Nigeria as well as the University of Lome, Togo, University of Sierra Leone, Freetown and Abomey-Calavi University, Benin Republic on NIAID/NIH grants management systems.

In addition, to acquire and customized cost-effective, simple and tailored electronic research administration management systems/work tools, for pre-award, post-award, compliance, preparation of federal and non-federal audits and grant data, in collaboration with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) and Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University of Michigan.

 

Lastly, sustain the training by making available, to research administrators primarily, faculty researchers, the University Community and external audience, web and online resources that will sustain the training and business operations in carrying out research administration of federal and non-federal funding agencies.

The first MUMPERA Training

The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Hayward Babale Mafuyai and Prof. Olugbenga A. Silas.

 Prof. H.B. Mafuyai spoke on the topic; University Research Culture and Strategies to Harness Unlocked Potentials for an Intensive Research Institute.

Prof. O.A. Silas spoke on the topic; NIH grants… The Multidisciplinary Funding Opportunities at the National Institute of Health (NIH), USA, Funding Agency.

The participants  were the Faculty Deans and Directors of Directorate in the University of Jos, totaling 56 in number attended the training.

 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

The workshop was to galvanize the various institutional leaders to evolve strategies that will deepen and intensify research activities respectively, as well as find opportunities for funding research at the NIH.

The Second MUMPERA training

The workshop was a 2 day program where it was facilitated by Prof. Charity Ameinyo, Director ORD and Co-Investigator of the MUMPERA Project, Mr. Mark G. Kparmak, Deputy Registrar Administration and Principal Investigator and Program Director of the MUMPERA Project and Mrs. Esther Gofwan, Co-Investigator MUMPERA Project.

Prof. Charity Amienyo spoke on the topic, Research Administration as a Profession.

Mr. Mark G. Kparmak spoke on the following topics:

ü Understanding the NIH and NIAID

ü Funding Opportunities at the NIH and NIAID for Low- and-MIddle Income Countries

ü NIH application Review Processes and Just-In-Time (JIT)

ü Key Personnel Bio-sketch Preparation: What to look out for as an Administrator/ Grant Writing in Perspective.

Mrs. Esther Gofwan spoke on the following topics:

ü NIH Grant Management Policy Statement: the RA toolkit

ü Budgeting for NIH Application

ü Research Costings: Allowable and Non-allowable Costs

ü Notice of Award and  Its Elements.

 The Participants were Faculty Officers and Faculty Finance Officers of the University of Jos and Finance Unit of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) totaling 42.5 average number of attendance.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING

The aim of the training was to enlighten participants to understand the complexities and their roles as Administrators, so they can be able to build a research culture within their various Faculties, Departments, Units and so on.
