Making Things Happen, Advancing Community Service: Unijos Faculty of Arts Leads by Example as VC Commissions Landscaping Project

The Staff and students of the Faculty of Arts, University of Jos, have distinguished themselves as a community committed to making things happen rather than merely observing events unfold.

This remark was made by Prof. Iorapuu Tor, former Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University and past Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Jos, during the commissioning of a landscaping project at the entrance of the Faculty of Arts building by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya on Friday May 15 2026.

The project, which began during Prof. Tor’s tenure as Dean, was completed under the leadership of the current Dean, Prof. Chentu Dauda Nguvugher, who served as Deputy Dean during Prof. Tor’s administration.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Prof. Nguvugher expressed delight that the project was completed and inaugurated during his tenure. He described the journey as one of valuable lessons and collective resilience, noting that the faculty had successfully overcome long-standing environmental challenges, particularly the difficulties posed by muddy and inaccessible walkways during the rainy season.

He extended heartfelt appreciation to Staff, students, and friends of the Faculty who contributed financially and materially toward the project’s success, stressing that every contribution made a significant difference. According to him, these collective efforts enabled the Faculty to take a decisive step forward in addressing its infrastructural challenges, rather than waiting solely on central University interventions, which may not always meet all its immediate needs.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, who was accompanied by members of the University management team, commended the Staff and students of the Faculty of Arts for their initiative and sense of responsibility in identifying a need and ensuring its completion. He noted that the Faculty had set a worthy example for others to emulate.

Prof. Ishaya further disclosed that the Block B project adjacent to the Faculty of Arts, which is nearing completion and will soon be handed over, will also incorporate similar interlocking and landscaping works at its frontage features that were not originally included due to earlier project challenges.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the University management to fulfilling its developmental mandate while calling on members of the University community to continue supporting initiatives that promote collective progress.

The Faculty of Arts, University of Jos, has once again demonstrated remarkable continuity in leadership and an admirable commitment to community service one of the core mandates of higher education institutions, alongside teaching and research. The initiative attracted commendation from stakeholders in attendance.

Present at the occasion were some members of the University Governing Council: Prof. Jurbe Molwus, Chairman ASUU UniJos branch and Prof. Amaka Ocheke; former member of the Governing Council, Prof. Sati Fwatshak; former Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, Prof. Patricia Manko Lar; National President of ASUU and Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Christopher Piwuna; Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors, Prof. Pwaveno Bamaiyi; Director of Physical Facilities, Arch.
