Professor Joshua Sunday

Head of Department

Dear Students, Staff and Visitors to our Department's webpage. On behalf of my dear Colleagues, I welcome you to the Department of Mathematics, University of Jos, Nigeria. We train our students to compete well with others and this can be seen by the performances of our graduates both within and outside Nigeria. I consider it a rare privilege to be the Head of Department giving the calibre of high ranking Professors and vibrant younger colleagues in the department. The Department is made up of two programmes: Mathematics Programme and Statistics Programme. The Mathematics Programme is both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels while the Statistics programme is only at the undergraduate level with high plans to soon kick-start the postgraduate Programme. Mathematics is the bedrock of all sciences and as such, the department services other Departments in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Science & Technology Education and Agriculture.

The Programmes in the Department at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are designed in such a way that students are equipped with the needed skills and knowledge to be able to compete globally with good mathematicians in finding solutions to challenging issues of our time.

The Department has various research interests covering Group theory, Numerical analysis, Biomathematics, Computational Mathematics, Statistical Modelling, Data Science, Spatial Modelling, Control Theory and in different areas of Applied Statistics. The focus of the Department with respect to research includes: modeling ecological population interaction and the dynamics of infectious diseases with focus on space-structured models and the application of computational methods of high order for the solution and simulation of real life problems. All these areas are handled by our well trained and competent staff who are always ready to supervise students up to the Ph.D level. Recently, the Department kick-started the Pastor E.A. Adeboye Professorial Chair in Mathematics endowment with Prof. J.N. Ndam as the pioneer Chair. The amount donated by Pastor E.A. Adeboye will be used in the development of mathematics in the Department with its focus on Biomathematics.

We will be glad to have you as our student or collaborate with you in terms of research. As a prospective student, we encourage that you avail yourself to make good use of this golden opportunity presented to you in developing yourself into a world-class mathematician that will be part of solving some of the complex problems of this world.

Kindly go through our departmental handbook for a better understanding of our programmes and courses. Once again you are welcome to our Department.

Philosophy/Objectives of Programmes

The philosophy of the programmes is to give students opportunity to obtain broad knowledge in the theory and applications of Mathematics/Statistics that prepares them for careers as practising Mathematicians/Statisticians. The objectives include the following:

  1. To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation in the knowledge and practical skills in Mathematics/Statistics.
  2. To develop in students the ability to apply their knowledge and skills to the solutions of theoretical and practical problems in Mathematics/Statistics.
  3. To develop in students a range of transferable skills of value in Mathematical or Statistical related and other employment.
  4. To provide students with knowledge and skills-base from which they proceed to further studies in specialised areas of Mathematics or Statistics or multidisciplinary areas involving Mathematics/Statistics.
  5. To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of Mathematics/Statistics in an industrial, economic, environmental and social context.
  6. To produce graduates who will be job creators through consultancy services in related areas of Mathematics or Statistical data analysis.
