BREAKING NEWS! N70 MILLION WIN FOR UNIJOS AT MAIDEN NIGERIA ENGINEERING OLYMPIAD
Students of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jos by the name Team Fortizo have emerged 3rd at the Grand Finale of the Maiden Nigerian Engineering Olympiad held at Eko Hotels and Suites Lagos on Tuesday, 30th June, 2026.
The team comprised of Bestman Ojomugbokenyode Agada, Emmanuel Ennan Dajan and Israel Smart Obidah with Engr. Dr. Meshach I. Alfa, HOD Civil Engineering serving as Faculty Guide.
By this feat, the students won the sum of twenty million naira as start up grant for their enterprise and fifty million naira worth of Laboratory equipment for the Faculty of Engineering. The Team designed a Solar-powered robotic apparatus capable to detecting potential diseases affecting crops like potato, maize, and ginger on farmlands. The Team stated that they were motivated to embark on the specific project because of the blight that ravaged potato farming season two years ago.
Receiving the team, led by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Rose E. Daffi, in his Boardroom on Monday 6 July 2026, a visibly elated Vice Chancellor thanked the team for making the University proud. He also commended the Faculty of Engineering for being unrelenting in producing graduates who solve problems. He especially commended the HOD of Civil Engineering Dr. Alfa, who has been consistent in working on highly relevant problem-solving projects, He announced that the University will immediately partner with the team to ensure that the design is commercialized.
The team appreciated the immense support of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya FBCS FNCS, and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Rose E. Daffi.
Again, this success story is N70 million proof that UNIJOS trains problem-solvers, not just graduates.
