Department of Insurance is a department running well-versed Insurance Programmes with applications in all fields of life.

The insurance programmes equip the students with the adequate knowledge of insurance and risk management through qualitative and quantitative innovations and applications, creation of values and sound managerial strategies that lead to career progression, success and technological advancements that will serve as the foundation and epitome of global management professionals.

The programmes offered by the Department such as the National Diploma, Undergraduates and Postgraduates Programmes incorporates the application of Mathematical, Statistical and Economic models for making decisions in financial planning, insurance policy formulations, insurance investment, specific and general risk managements in all human endeavors, thereby providing excellent foundation in evaluation and management of risk, assuring economic stability in insurance firms, financial organizations, businesses and other fields of life.

About Us

The history of the Department dates back to 2013 when the Senate of the University of Jos approved the opening of the Department of Actuarial Science and Insurance. However, based on the directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The University Senate approved in 2014, the split of the two programs into B.Sc. Insurances and Actuarial Science.

The pioneer Head of the Department was Professor. Hashimu Bulus, was succeeded by Dr. B. Wurim in January 2018 and Dr. Adenike Olanrewaju Owolabi in 2022. The Department runs a B.Sc in Insurance, Master of Risk Management and Insurance, Postgraduate Diploma in Insurance, Diploma in Insurance, and Ph.D. in Insurance.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION / HIGHLIGHT

  1. The postgraduate program is to prepare the participants directly for a career in Insurance. The program will equip the students with advanced research training in Insurance promote original research, and contribute to national developments. This will be achieved by providing our graduates with an understanding of the underlying insurance principles that may be applied to a range of problems and issues in commercial and business environments when they go out to practice.
  2. The Master's program is to prepare participants directly for a career in Insurance. The program will equip the students with advanced research training in insurance and promote research which are original and contributes to national developments. This will be achieved by providing our graduates with an understanding of underlying insurance principles that will be applied to a range of problems and issues in commercial and business environments when they go out to practice

AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF PROGRAMME

  1. Postgraduate Diploma:

  1. Prepare graduates to combine a practical approach with sound theory to create a learning experience for the insurance industry.
  2. To prepare non-insurance graduates to acquire insurance knowledge and skills
  3. To prepare them for further higher educational pursuits in Insurance and Risk Management
  1. The objectives of the Master of Science (M.Sc)Degree Program are to:
  • Prepare graduates to combine a practical approach with sound theory to create a learning experience for the insurance industry. The program will reflect the interfaces between insurance, risk management and financial services; and it will equip its graduates with the skills necessary to succeed in the insurance and financial industries as:
    • Risk Managers
    • Financial Advisers 
    • Consultants 
    • Underwriters
    • Financial analysts and
    • Insurance analysts.
  • Prepare students for the professional examination of the Chartered Insurance Institute of U.K. and Nigeria.
