UNIJOS VC Prof. Tanko Ishaya HONOURED FOR CHAMPIONING GENDER INCLUSION IN ACADEMIA

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos, *Professor Tanko Ishaya, FBCS, FNCS, has received the Award of Excellence for Support of the Female Gender in the Academic Environment. 

The Award which is tagged“ He4She’ the man amongst the female awardees was presented by Focus on the Family Foundation during its 2026 Awards & Recognition Ceremony tagged: Give to Gain: Celebrating Women Gifts, Grace and Growth, held on Saturday, 13th June 2026 at the Parliament International Conference Centre, Jos.

 

The Foundation described Professor Tanko as “an outstanding achiever” whose tenure has delivered major human and capital development strides. They noted his commitment to gender inclusion, evidenced by the appointment of the first female Registrar, first female Bursar, and a female University Librarian on his Management team.

 

Responding, the Vice Chancellor said he was humbled by the recognition, and it would inspire more collaborations with institutions like the Foundation. In a show of “walking the talk,” Professor Tanko and his wife, pledged to sponsor the education of a daughter of one of the awardees from Kaduna South, who returned One Million Naira forgotten in her shop.

The Vice Chancellor was accompanied to the ceremony by his wife, Hon. Justice Sharon Ishaya , the University Registrar, Rejoice James Songden, PhD, the Bursar Victoria Mangut Mankilik and the Director, Centre for Gender and Women Studies , Prof. Chikas Tsilpi among others.

Professor Tanko’s award stood out as he was the only male among 11 awardees.
