UNIJOS SENATE ELECTS PROFESSOR JOSHUA P. CHOLLOM AS NEW DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLOR (ACADEMICS)

The Senate of the University of Jos, at its 1st Special Meeting for the 2025/2026 Academic Session which held on Monday12th January 2026 elected a new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) for the University. He is Professor Joshua Pam Chollom of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Natural Sciences. The appointment, which is for a renewable term of two years takes effect from the day of election, and is subject to confirmation by the University’s Governing Council.

 

The meeting, which was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor/Chairman of Senate, in accordance with the Laws governing the University, considered the Vice-Chancellor’s nomination of two candidates - Professor Joshua Pam Chollom and Professor Geofrey Kumleng. After the presentation of the candidates, Professor Kumleng declared that he had decided to step down for Professor Chollom whom he considered a mentor and father, a decision which led to the unanimous adoption of the nomination of Professor Joshua Pam Chollom for the position.

 

Professor Joshua Pam Chollom, who hails from Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria, is a Professor of Mathematics with specialization and vast experience in Numerical Analysis. He is a distinguished scholar who has held several academic and administrative positions including: Dean of Faculty of Natural Sciences, Academic Board member, National Mathematical Center Abuja and Director of Academic Planning, a position he maintained until his current appointment.

                He is also a Trustee and Council member of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria, and Member of the Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria (FAAN).

Professor Chollom takes over from Professor Rahilla Plangnan Gowon whose tenure has ended. Members of University Senate took turns to pay glowing tributes to Professor Gowon for her dedication, great commitment and service during her tenure.
