PRESS RELEASE

UNIJOS CLARIFIES VC SELECTION PROCESS, DISMISSES CONCERNS RAISED WITHOUT PROPER VERIFICATION

The attention of the Management of the University of Jos has been drawn to an online report authored by Waziri Isa Gwantu published on 28th October, 2026 by Education Monitor titled: “UNIJOS VC: Race Selection Process shrouded in secrecy, sparks Transparency Concerns.”

The University wishes to clarify as follows;

  1. The process of selecting the Vice-Chancellor is contained in the First Schedule of the University Act (Section 2(2).  In accordance with the provisions, processes for the selection are ongoing.  As provided by the Act, the position was advertised on 1st June, 2026 in two National Dailies (Leadership, and Vanguard Newspapers).
  2. The onus of selecting the Vice-Chancellor is the responsibility of the Governing Council of the University, and not the Vice Chancellor. The process of selecting the Vice Chancellor is ongoing transparently with no concern whatsoever. The publication by Waziri Isa Gwantu is clearly false, and unverifiable. He may wish to seek further clarifications from Council on any matter concerning the process.

The University wishes to state that sharing unverified and misleading information is highly irresponsible, and it will not hesitate to seek legal redress forthwith.

We urge the public to rely on official communication channels for verified information on the process of selecting the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos.

The University of Jos remains committed in upholding its laws, policies and established procedure in the interest of transparency, institutional integrity and public confidence.

Dr. Rejoice James Songden
