UNIJOS VC PAYS COURTESY VISITS TO ARMY GOC, PLATEAU POLICE COMMISSIONER

Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos (UniJos), Prof. Tanko Ishaya FBCS FNCS, along with management staff of the University, have paid separate courtesy visits to the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Maxwell Khorbe Cantonment (formerly 3 Division) of the Nigerian Army, Jos, and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Wunukhe Maxwell Dangana, and the newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, CP Ayodeji Faniyan.

The visits were aimed at consolidating the existing relationship between the University of Jos, the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force.

While welcoming the newly appointed security chiefs to their offices, Prof. Ishaya emphasized the importance of collaboration between the University and the state's security agencies.

He described the University as a large community within the state, with more than 40,000 students, over 3,000 staff and a significant number of foreign students. He appealed to the security agencies to consider the University of Jos a major priority, calling for proactive security measures to prevent crime and address emerging security challenges within and around the university community. He added that the University owes students and staff a duty of care, as well as the responsibility to provide a conducive learning environment.

Prof. Ishaya also expressed interest in exploring mutually beneficial partnerships with the two security agencies to strengthen the proposed Centre for Security and Military Studies in the University, particularly around the areas of sharing expertise in peace support operations and techniques.

Major General Dangana in his response assured the University of the Nigerian Army's support on security matters, stressing that safety is an important component of a conducive learning environment. He added that a safe environment would enable students to acquire knowledge and become good ambassadors of the country.

Similarly, CP Faniyan assured the University of the Police Command's readiness to support the institution. He pledged to work with the university to improve security through preventive measures, modern technology and other strategies aimed at creating a safe environment.

The courtesy visits further strengthened the partnership between the University of Jos, the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Plateau State Police Command, with all sides expressing their commitment to continued collaboration in promoting safety, peace and stability within the university community.

As these partnerships grow stronger, they offer hope for a secure and peaceful academic environment where students can learn, staff can serve and the University of Jos can continue to deliver excellent academic experience while shaping a brighter future for Plateau State, Nigeria and the world at large
