UNIJOS VC CALLS FOR IMMORTALIZATION OF LATE PROFESSOR SONNI TYODEN AS FAMILY DONATES BOOKS TO THE UNIVERSITY

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has called for the immortalization of the late Professor Sonni Gwanle Tyoden in recognition of his immense contributions to the University and the society at large.

The call was made during a brief ceremony for the formal handover of books donated by the family of the late Professor to the Department of Political Science, University of Jos, as instructed i his will.

The books, which were willed by the late erudite scholar, have been shared between the University of Jos and Plateau State University, Bokkos, were presented by his wife, Her Excellency Mrs. Abigail Tyoden.

Late Professor Sonni Tyoden was a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and former Deputy Governor of Plateau State. He was a distinguished scholar of Political Science who left indelible footprints in academia and public service.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor at the event, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Joshua Pam Chollom, welcomed guests and expressed profound appreciation to the family for fulfilling the late Professor's wish.

Prof. Chollom described the late Prof. Tyoden as a man who lived a good and impactful life, whose legacies will continue to endure. He extended condolences to Mrs. Tyoden and the entire family and assured that the University will cherish the donation.

He commended the family for the thoughtful gesture and directed the Head of Department of Political Science to ensure that the books are properly preserved, catalogued and put to effective use for teaching, learning and research.

In her remark shortly before presenting the books, Mrs. Abigail Tyoden said she was fulfilled and happy to have been able to carry out her late husband's wish of donating his personal books to the two universities where he served meritoriously. She prayed that the books would be useful to the academic community.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Head of Department, Political Science, Dr. Ibrahim Bulus Kwopnan, thanked the Tyoden family for the donation, noting that it came at a very auspicious time as the Department is preparing for its upcoming accreditation exercise.

Dr. Kwopnan said the Department intends to stock its Departmental library with the donated books to enrich its collection and expressed optimism that students and staff will make judicious use of the materials. Furthermore, he stated that a section will be created in the Library in name of Late Professor Tyoden.

Also present at the event were the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Gideon Goshit; Professor Dung Pam Sha, Professor Plangsat Danyill, Mr. Silas Vem (the Chief of Staff of Late Professor Tyoden) the Faculty Librarian, Mrs. Abi Enna and other staff of the Department of Political Science.

Highpoint of the event was the symbolic handover of the books to the University and group photographs.
