Professor Tungchama, Friday Philip, MBBS, M.Sc. (CAMH), FWACP (Psychiatry), is a Professor of Psychiatry, Consultant Psychiatrist and Head, Department of Psychiatry University of Jos, Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, Nigeria
Professor Tungchama is a Professor of Psychiatry with specialization in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. He serves as Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Jos and Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he is committed to delivering efficient, evidence-based mental health services to patients.
He obtained his MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 2005, completed his medical housemanship in 2006, and began residency training in Psychiatry, which he completed in 2015. He holds an M.Sc. in Child and Adolescent Mental Health from the University of Ibadan and is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (Psychiatry).
Professor Tungchama joined the University of Jos as Lecturer II during his residency training and rose through the ranks to become Professor of Psychiatry on October 1, 2026. He has held several academic and administrative roles, including Departmental Examination Officer, Level Coordinator, Acting Head of Department, and currently Head of Department of Psychiatry (elected March 17, 2025).
He teaches medical students, postgraduate trainees of the University of Jos, and candidates of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians. His academic interests include community development, research in child and adolescent psychiatry, and advancing consultation-liaison mental health.
Professor Tungchama continues to contribute to medical education, research, and leadership, with a mission to strengthen psychiatric services and improve mental health outcomes in Nigeria.
