SociologySociology

Demonstrating the transformative power of alumni engagement on Wednesday, 21st October 2026, the Class of 2000 of the Department of Sociology, University of Jos, hosted a presentation ceremony to celebrate high-achieving undergraduates. Cash prizes and commemorative plaques were presented to the top-performing students across all academic levels in recognition of scholarly distinction and to foster healthy academic competition.

The landmark event brought together key departmental and administrative leaders, including the Head of Department, Prof. Peter Wika, alongside departmental academic staff and Mrs Ritshima Dorathy Dalum, who represented the Directorate of Alumni Relations.

Representing the Class of 2000 were distinguished alumni: Dr Gad Shamaki, Global President of the University of Jos Alumni Association (UJAA); Mrs Suzan Iliya, Senior Deputy Registrar, University of Jos; and Dr Nalong Yale, Senior Lecturer, Sociology Department. In their addresses, the alumni representatives charged the students to remain steadfast, diligent, and focused on their studies, while instilling in them the enduring value of giving back to their alma mater.

The 2026 Academic Awardees:

100 Level: Josiah Nuhu Jumba (CGPA: 4.28)

200 Level: Gloria Zichat Mathew (CGPA: 4.43)

300 Level: Dorcas Oyewole (CGPA: 4.86)

Expanding on their commitment to the department, the Class of 2000 also pledged to mobilise set members to donate laptops and digital learning gadgets to enhance teaching and research capabilities.

This noble initiative underscores the critical role of alumni engagement in elevating academic standards and driving the growth and development of the University of Jos.
