Prof. James Taiwo Obindo
Professor of Psychiatry | Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist

Professor James Taiwo Obindo, M.B.Ch.B, FWACP (Psychiatry) is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Jos and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, Nigeria.

Professor Obindo is a distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist with over two decades of academic, clinical, and administrative leadership experience. He earned his medical degree (M.B.Ch.B) from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1995 and completed his residency training at Jos University Teaching Hospital, obtaining his Fellowship in Psychiatry from the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in 2003.

He currently serves as President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria and Chairman of the Faculty of Psychiatry, WACP (Nigeria Chapter). He has previously served as Head of Department of Psychiatry for five years, leading multidisciplinary teams in both inpatient and outpatient care. His research focuses on Community Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, with particular emphasis on depression, dementia, substance use disorders, and integrating mental health into neglected tropical disease initiatives.

An accomplished scholar, Professor Obindo has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, supervised more than ten Fellowship dissertations and a Ph.D. thesis, and serves as a journal reviewer and external examiner. He has led major research projects funded by international organizations including the European Union (UNODC drug control), Wellcome Trust (DepGenAfrica), CBM Australia, COR-NTD United Kingdom, and the Anesvad Foundation, all dedicated to strengthening health systems and expanding access to mental healthcare.
