Professor David Danjuma Shwe, MBBCh, FMCPaed, MSc, PGPN, PGDM Professor of Paediatrics (Infectious Diseases & Neonatal Medicine), University of Jos

Professor Shwe is a Professor and Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Neonatal Medicine in the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Jos, Nigeria. He has nearly two decades of experience as a clinical lecturer and practicing paediatrician. He earned his MBBCh from the University of Jos, a Postgraduate Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition from Boston, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Sciences, an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology, and Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Paediatrics.

His research focuses on vector-borne and zoonotic diseases (malaria, Lassa fever, Zika virus) and neonatal medicine (neonatal sepsis, jaundice, and umbilical cord care). He has extensive experience investigating emerging pathogens, evaluating new drugs and vaccines (including RTS,S malaria vaccine), and validating medical devices such as Bilimetrix, COVID-19 rapid diagnostic tests, and phototherapy devices. He is well positioned to respond to disease outbreaks and to design, conduct, and analyze community-based epidemiological research.

Professor Shwe applies systems thinking, multidisciplinary collaboration, and infectious disease epidemiology in his work. He has successfully led and coordinated several funded research projects and contributed to national and international guidelines, including the National Birth Defect Surveillance, National Obstetrics & Neonatal Protocols, BLLS/ELLS, CEMoNC, PROMPT-Nig/UK, and the WAHO Non-Malaria Fevers in Africa initiative. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact local and international journals and contributed chapters to medical textbooks.
