Professor Oluwatoyin Abayomi Ogunyewo is a Professor of Community/Public Health Nursing Department of Nursing Science, Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, University of Jos and the current Deputy Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology.
Professor Oluwatoyin Abayomi Ogunyewo is a seasoned academic and practitioner in Community and Public Health Nursing, with a career spanning over three decades in nursing education, research, and professional service. Born on March 23, 1963, in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, he has consistently advanced the frontiers of nursing practice and scholarship in Nigeria and beyond.
He holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Nursing, as well as an M.Sc. in Health Sociology from the University of Ibadan. He later earned his Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. His academic journey is complemented by professional recognition, including Fellowship of the West African College of Nursing (2010) and the Best Paper Award at the Royal College of Nursing International Nursing Research Conference in Sheffield, UK (2019).
Professor Ogunyewo has served in various academic capacities at the University of Jos, rising through the ranks from Lecturer II in 2007 to Professor. He has held leadership roles such as Acting Head and later substantive Head of the Department of Nursing Science, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, and representative on several university committees. His teaching portfolio covers both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with courses in community health nursing, occupational health, sociology of health, nursing concepts, and advanced research methods.
A prolific researcher, Professor Ogunyewo has published extensively in national and international journals on topics including reproductive health, nursing education reforms, evidence-based practice, maternal and child health, and interprofessional collaboration. His work has influenced nursing practice and policy, particularly in areas of adolescent reproductive health, safe motherhood, and community-based interventions. He has supervised numerous undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses, mentoring the next generation of nursing scholars.
Beyond academia, he has contributed significantly to professional development and community service. He serves as an external examiner for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, and Ahmadu Bello University, among others. He is an active member of professional bodies including the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Graduate Nurses Association of Nigeria, and the Association of Community/Public Health Nurses of Nigeria. His community engagements include youth sensitization initiatives, HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, and leadership roles in faith-based and neighborhood organizations.
