The Department of Radiography is an academic and professional unit within a university’s health sciences or medical sciences structure, responsible for the education, training, research and professional development of radiographers. The Department prepares students to provide safe, effective and patient-centred medical imaging and related healthcare services.

Radiography is a healthcare profession that applies ionising and non-ionising radiation, imaging technologies and other advanced techniques in the diagnosis, management and monitoring of disease and injury. Depending on the programme and institutional structure, the discipline encompasses areas such as diagnostic radiography, medical imaging, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, mammography, interventional imaging and radiation protection.

The Department's undergraduate programme combines foundational sciences with professional and clinical education. Students receive training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiographic techniques, imaging technology, patient care, radiation physics and protection, image evaluation, ethics and professional practice. Clinical education is undertaken in teaching hospitals and other accredited healthcare facilities, where students gain supervised practical experience in patient management and medical imaging procedures.

At postgraduate level, the Department may offer advanced programmes and research opportunities in specialised areas of radiography and medical imaging. Academic staff engage in research addressing contemporary challenges in medical imaging, diagnostic accuracy, radiation safety, imaging technology, healthcare delivery and other areas relevant to the advancement of the profession.

The Department also contributes to the wider healthcare system through professional service, continuing education, community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration with medical practitioners, nurses, medical laboratory scientists, physiotherapists and other health professionals.

The overarching goal of the Department is to produce competent, ethical, technologically proficient and research-oriented radiographers capable of delivering high-quality imaging services and contributing meaningfully to patient care, healthcare development and the advancement of medical imaging practice.

Vision

To be a centre of excellence in radiography education, research, innovation and professional practice, producing highly skilled radiographers who contribute to quality healthcare nationally and internationally.

Mission

To provide comprehensive academic, clinical and research training in radiography; promote ethical and patient-centred professional practice; advance knowledge through innovative research; and contribute to improved healthcare delivery through excellence in medical imaging.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department of Radiography is founded on the belief that radiography is a vital health profession that combines scientific knowledge, technological innovation, clinical competence, professional ethics and compassionate patient care in the promotion of health and the diagnosis, management and monitoring of disease.

The Department believes that effective radiography education should develop graduates who possess sound theoretical knowledge, strong clinical skills, critical thinking abilities and the capacity to adapt to emerging technologies and evolving healthcare needs. Particular emphasis is placed on patient safety, radiation protection, accuracy in medical imaging, professional responsibility and respect for human dignity.

The Department recognises that quality radiographic practice requires continuous learning, evidence-based practice, research and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Accordingly, students and academic staff are encouraged to engage in research and lifelong professional development that contribute to advances in medical imaging and improved healthcare outcomes.

The Department further believes that radiographers have an important responsibility to the individual, the healthcare system and society. Its educational philosophy therefore seeks to produce competent, ethical, compassionate, innovative and socially responsible radiographers who can function effectively in diverse healthcare settings and contribute to the advancement of the profession nationally and internationally.

Ultimately, The Department is committed to excellence in radiography education, clinical practice, research and community service, while ensuring that technological advancement remains firmly anchored in patient-centred care, safety and professional integrity.
