History

History

The history of Computer Science at the University of Jos dates back to 2001 when the Computer Science program was introduced within the Department of Mathematics during the 2001/2002 academic session. Recognizing the growing importance of the discipline, the Department of Computer Science was formally established in the 2012/2013 academic session. This establishment came after approvals from both the Senate of the University of Jos and the National Universities Commission (NUC), aiming to provide a dedicated focus for ongoing development.

Professor T. Ishaya was appointed as the pioneer Head of the Department, serving from 2012 to 2016. He was succeeded by Professor Choji Davou Nyap, who led the department from 2016 until February 2021. Since February 2021, Professor Nachamada Vachaku Blamah has been serving as the Head of the Department. Despite being one of the youngest departments in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Department of Computer Science has demonstrated significant growth and development.

Duamlong set an academic record for graduating as the best student with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.32 at 70 years old, as announced by the vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Tanko Ishaya. The artist is a native of Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State and has spent his whole life in the sports industry; he will clock 70 years old in July 2023. Baba Duamlong was a one-time coach of Nigeria’s senior football team, Super Eagles. In this interview with The Education Report at his Rantiya residence in Jos, while painting some artworks, he gave insights into his switch to the world of art, color and painting, the secret of his academic record of 4.32 CGPA, and his conferment with a first degree at 70 years old.

A Nigerian lady, Haruna Abigail Awadzi who graduated top of her class has attributed her academic feat to the grace of God, hard work, and determination to succeed against all odds. Awadzi from Arikpa, Nasarawa State emerged as the Best Graduating Student (BGS) in Pharmacy from the University of Jos. Speaking with n-Mirror after her oath-taking and induction as a Pharmacist, Awadzi said she had to deny herself of several social activities and concentrate on her studies coupled with the help of God to sustain this enviable educational attainment. The UNIJOS Best Graduand, however, noted that achieving the feat would have been impossible without the sacrificial support of her parents as well as the favorable disposition of her lecturers who are always willing to help their students
