SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The general regulations in respect of this programme are as stipulated in the Regulations Governing Higher Degrees and Diplomas of the University of Jos. The more specific requirements for graduation in the Ph.D (Law) degree programme are as follows:

1. 1. The candidate for a Ph.D (Law) degree is to undertake a year of course work, during which he is required to register for the following courses:
    1. Two (2) Law courses, that is Jurisprudence and Legal Theory and Research Methodology;
    2. Any other course(s) prescribed by the Senate of the University of Jos.
  2. The candidate is to submit, in consultation with his/her supervisor, a thesis on an approved law topic based on his/her research, which he/she shall defend before an External Examiner. Prior to the submission of the thesis to the Faculty Board of Examiners, the candidate will present a research proposal on the study, and malke three (3) seminar presentations on the research done on the topic. The thesis must provide evidence of original work or capacity for critical analysis, and must be written during the candidate’s course of study. A candidate submitting a thesis shall be examined orally first internally by the Faculty Board of examiners, and then by an External Examiner on the subject of his/her thesis, and must pass the oral examination in order to qualify for the award of the Ph.D (Law) degree. The thesis must comply with the Faculty of Law Guidelines for the preparation of Theses and Dissertations. The candidate shall submit the requisite number of copies of the thesis for examination, as may be determined by the Faculty Board of Examiners.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR Postgraduate Diploma:

For the postgraduate diploma programme in Conflict Management and Peace Studies, candidates should possess not less than a Third Class Degree from a recognized University.

Ph.D (LAW)

The Ph.D (Law) Programme shall run for a minimum of 36 Calender months and a maximum of 60 Calender months.

For Extension beyond the maximum period, special permission of the Faculty Postgraduate Committee shall be required.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN LAW AND DIPLOMACY (Ph.D(LAW AND BIPLOMACY))

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

A Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) from the University of Jos or a similar degree from an approved University with a minimum of a weightier score average of 60 points.

A minimum of two (2) positive references as to character and learning must be submitted by the applicant. At least one of the references must be obtained from the applicant’s supervisor in the course of his/her studies leading up to the award of the degree of Masters of Arts in Law and Diplomacy.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS INTO M.phil/Ph.D. LAW

The criteria for admission are as follows:

1. 1. A master of Laws (LL.M) degree from an approved University with a minimum of a weighted score average of 60 points.
  2. A minimum of two (2) positive references as to character and learning must be submitted by the applicant. At least one of the references must be obtained from the applicant’s former lecturers in Faculty of Law where he/she obtained the Master of Law (LL.M) degree.

The criteria for admission into the LL.M programme are as follows:

1. 1. A Bachelor of Laws degree from an approved University with a Second Class Honours Lower Division. Faculty may however, admit a candidate with a Third Class Degree, if in the opinion of the Faculty Postgraduate Committee, candidate has five years post-qualification experience.
  2. A minimum of five (5) credit passes, including English Language and Literature in English, at not more than two (2) sittings in SSCE/GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent;
  3. A minimum of two positive references as to character and learning must be submitted by the applicant.
  4. At least one of the references must be obtained from the applicant’s former lecturers in the University where he/she obtained the first degree in Law

MASTER OF ARTS IN LAW AND DIPLOMACY (MALD)

Entry Qualifications (Eligibility)

To qualify for admission into the M.A Law and Diplomacy degree programme, the candidate must posses a Second Class, LL.B (Hons.) degree awarded by this or any other approved University or comparable institution. Candidates with equivalent degree in Political Science, International Relations or Economics, or other disciplines which the Postgraduate Committee of the Faculty may consider relevant experience of the candidate, may be admitted. Faculty may however, admit a candidate with a Third Class Degree, if in the opinion of the Faculty Postgraduate Committee, candidate has five years post-qualification experience.

Duration of Programmes

M.A Law

1. 1. The MALD programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months with project.
  2. For extension beyond the maximum period, special permission of the Postgraduate School Board shall be required.

The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Joash Amupitan is a Professor of Law with specialization and experience in Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance, Corporate Law and Privatization Law. He obtained his Bachelor of Law Degree in 1987 at University of Jos and then proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos where, on successful completion of his Barrister at Law programme, was Called to Bar in 1988. He later enrolled for a Master of Law programme in the University of Jos which he successfully completed in 1993. Professor Amupitan acquired his Ph.D in Law also from the University of Jos in 2007.

A distinguished Academic who believes in leadership by example, Professor Amupitan joined the services of the University of Jos in 1989 as an Assistant Lecturer and rose through the Academic ranks to attain the position of Reader in 2003 and Professor in 2008. Professor Amupitan was conferred with the revered position of Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN in 2014 in recognition of his achievements in the Law profession among many other professional accolades.

Professor Amupitan has held several Academic and Administrative positions including Representative of the Faculty of Law in several Boards in the University; Head of Department, Public Law; Dean, Faculty of Law; Chairman, Committee of Deans and Directors, Member, Governing Council, University of Jos and Member, Governing Council, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies as well as Council of Legal Education among many others.

A member of several Professional Bodies and Associations including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM) and National Association of Law Teachers, Professor Amupitan is a seasoned Legal Luminary equipped with over Thirty-Four (34) years of Academic and Professional experience in addition to other community services he is rendering.

Professor Amupitan’s research interests are diverse and wide ranging from providing the Legal Framework for the Privatization of Public Enterprises in Nigeria, Reform of Electoral Laws in Nigeria to the Reform of Privatization Law in Nigeria and Petroleum Industries Law Reform in Nigeria among others.

He has over 50 Journal, Book Chapter, Conference, Monograph, Case Review and Research Report publications and has contributed to the successful execution of a number of national and internationally funded projects. He has successfully graduated Thirteen (13) M.Phil/PhD Candidates and more than 30 Master of Law Students under his supervision.

Professor Amupitan who hails from Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, is happily married Dr (Mrs) Yemisi Amupitan and they are blessed with Four (4) children.
