A. PERSONAL STATEMENT
The goal of this research is to determine the profile of stroke in patients admitted into the hospital following a clinical diagnosis of stroke or those referred to the center from other healthcare facilities in order to assess the risk factors of stroke, determine the sensitivity of instruments of clinical subtyping, determine the case fatality rate of stroke and the degree of functional impairment of survivors. In the three years I have been the only neurologist in the hospital I have found out that stroke is the commonest cause of neurological admission( about 5 to 10 per week) and neurological mortality. A sizeable number of patients are also admitted for a repeat episode of stroke which indicate a failure of secondary prophylaxis. Since this study will attempt to identify risk factors for stroke, appropriate recommendations will be made for both primary and secondary prophylaxis to reduce the attendant mortality and morbidity associated with this disease
