Personal Statement:

The goal of this proposed research is to characterize fungal agents of neonatal sepsis by molecular methods. I plan to identify the agents, determine their antifungal susceptibility pattern as well as their resistance genes. I have the necessary expertise as well as motivation to successfully execute the proposed research. I have a good background in medical microbiology with excellent training in medical mycology. As a fellow of the West African College of Physicians I did a dissertation on molecular detection of Candida albicans from patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis as well as Yeast and Yeast-like agents of vulvovaginal candidiasis for my MSc in medical microbiology. I have being involved in many research activities with my proposed mentor (Prof. Ayanbimpe Grace) as well as my co-investigators (Dr Toma Bose and Dr Onyedibe Kenneth). I was involved in many research activities requiring neonates as subjects and equally lead the work that identified the first case of neonatal sepsis due to Moesziomyces bullatus in a preterm low birth weight infant in Jos, Nigeria.
