Estate Management
DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION
- Brief History of Department of Estate Management
The Department of Estate Management was established in 2012 as a sub Department under the Department of Building in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The pioneer staff were employed under the Department of Building and later transferred to Estate Management Department in preparation for the resource verification of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2014. The Department, under the pioneer headship of Professor Yohana D. Izam of the Department of Building, hosted the NUC Visitation Panel in 2014, and successfully secured an approval to run a degree course. The B.Sc Estate Management degree course began during the 2014/2015 academic session following the admission of 37 pioneer students. Following this feat, the headship of the Department changed when Dr Maren Mallo Daniel was appointed in February 2015 to takeover from Professor Yohanna D. Izam. As of October 2017 when this brief history was written, the Department had students up to year three, and the number of academic staff on permanent employment in the Department was Seven. The Department also had two non-teaching staff who were handling affairs in the Department’s secretariat.
- Available programmes and staff involved
The department is currently running a B.Sc Estate Management degree course and there are Seven permanently engaged lecturers who are involved in teaching the students. In addition to the Seven teaching staff, the department also has associate lecturers from sister Departments (General Studies, Building, Urban and Regional Planning, Quantity Surveying) and Faculties (Law, Social Sciences and Management Sciences) within the University of Jos. Furthermore, the Department is working on a proposal for the introduction of MSc programme in Real Estate Development and Management.
c) Entry Qualifications
Admission into the Department and the University in general can be classified into those for holders of the new senior secondary school certificate (SSCE) and National Examination Council of Nigeria (NECO) and special admissions to take account of the transitional period between the old and new educational system.
- Normal Admission: Normal Admission shall normally be by entrance exam organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). To be eligible, candidates must have successfully completed the Senior Secondary School Programme and passed with credit in the prescribed examinations in relevant subjects. These would include Mathematics, English Language, Economics, and any other two from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Sciences, Geography, Book Keeping or Final Accounting, Fine Arts, Technical Drawing, Surveying and Building Construction. Students admitted through the School of Remedial Studies of the University of Jos should have at least credit passes at ‘O’ level in Physics and Mathematics (SSCE, NECO or any other approved examination body recognized by the Federal Ministry of Education).
- Direct Entry Admission: Holders of Higher School Certificate (HSC) or General Certificate of Education (GCE), Advanced Level (AL) into two relevant subjects or Ordinary National Diploma in Estate Management or very closely related disciplines or professional certificate who applied through the JAMB could be admitted into Year or Part II of the programme provided that they satisfy the relevant credits requirement specified in 2.1 above. Such a student may be required to take remedial courses from Year or Part I as may be recommended by the department. Holders of degrees in the related disciplines or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Estate Management could also be considered for Direct Entry admission. Such candidates may be admitted into Year II or Part III provided that they meet the relevant credits requirement as stated above.
- Special Admission: the following policy guidelines apply to some categories of applicants:
- Holders of HND in related disciplines may, in special cases, be considered for admission into 300 level of the programme.
- Transfer cases from other institutions on good grounds could be admitted to appropriate level of the programme provided that any deficiency in their background is made up.
