Applicants are invited to apply for the PGD, MSc and M.Phil./PhD programmes for the 2023/2024 Academic Session in the following disciplines:

M.Phil./PhD

i.                     M.Phil/PhD Degree in Science Laboratory Technology (Biology Techniques)

ii.                   M.Phil/PhD Degree in Science Laboratory Technology (Biochemistry Techniques)

iii.                  M.Phil/PhD Degree in Science Laboratory Technology (Microbiology Techniques)

iv.                  M.Phil/PhD Degree in Science Laboratory Technology (Chemical Petroleum Techniques)

v.                   M.Phil/PhD Degree in Science Laboratory Technology (Geology Techniques)

Postgraduate programmes in Science Laboratory Technology are designed to produce well trained professionals for fundamental research in various aspects of Science Laboratory Technology and for applied research in the fields of Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Chemical/Petroleum, Biochemistry and other areas vital to laboratory practice. The programme prepares students for highly skilled careers in industry, academic and laboratory research.  The Department is committed to the application of Science Laboratory Techniques as a solution to societal problems. Broad laboratory skills are also impacted through teaching of laboratory-based courses and qualities of results from laboratory experiments/analysis that are utmost priorities. The vision of the Department is to produce graduates with a broad-based knowledge who would be job creators rather than job seekers. It is intended that such graduates should be capable of working in various areas of human endeavour where Science Laboratory Techniques could be used for human development and research.

 

A. PGD Basic Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission into the PGD-SLT programme will be as follows:

i)          All candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics and two other relevant science subjects at ‘O’ Level.

ii)         Candidates with Bachelor’s degree from an approved University must obtain a minimum of third class degree in the relevant science discipline.

iii)         Holders of HND/Final Diploma in relevant programmes from approved institutions with a minimum of lower Credit may also be considered for admission.

(iv)        Holders of HND/Final Diploma in relevant programmes from NISLT with a minimum of lower Credit may also be considered for admission.

 

Full-time Postgraduate Diploma programme in SLT shall run for a minimum of two semesters and a maximum of four semesters. The Part-time Postgraduate Programme shall run for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of six semesters.

 

B. MSc. Basic Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission into the M.Sc. programme will be as follows:

a.  Candidate must possess a minimum of 5 credit passes in O’ level Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

b.     Applicants shall hold a first degree with a minimum of a second class lower of the University of Jos or any other University in Science Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, Zoology, Plant Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Geology or relevant allied courses with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on a 5 point scale.

c.    Candidates with third class degree and/or HND from any recognized University or Institution in Science Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, Zoology, Plant Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Geology or relevant allied courses with three years’ post qualification experience may be admitted after obtaining a postgraduate diploma (PGD). The eligibility of such candidates for admission shall be determined by the Postgraduate School Board in consultation with the Department.

 

Other general requirements for admission into postgraduate programme in University of Jos as provided in the School of Postgraduate Studies guidelines not already mentioned shall apply. These requirements are reviewed from time to time in accordance with the University postgraduate framework.

 

C. PhD Basic Admission Requirements

PhD programmes shall primarily be by Research. However, Departmental Postgraduate Committee may prescribe some courses of not more than 12 credit units to be taken by the candidates. A Doctoral (Ph.D) Thesis of 12 credit units MUST be defended before a Panel of Internal and External Examiners.

i.                     A student shall present at least three seminars (proposal, progress and upgrade/final), submit and defend a thesis proposal

ii.                   A student shall carry out research in a relevant area of specialization and submit an acceptable PhD thesis approved by supervisor(s), internal and external examiners

 

Candidates for PhD admission must satisfy the following conditions:

i.                     Candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics and two other relevant science subjects at ‘O’ Level.

ii.                   Candidates with Bachelor’s degree from an approved university must obtain a minimum of second class lower division with a CGPA of 2.5/5.0

iii.                  Candidates must have Academic Master’s Degree in relevant areas with a CGPA of 4.0/5.0 and thesis score not lower than 60% (B).

iv.                  Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem-solving potentials.
