ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR M.Phil/Ph.D

For M.Phil/Ph.D in Biochemistry, candidates must have academic Master’s degree in iv. Public Health and Sanitary Microbiology Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology or equivalent areas with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 and thesis score not lower than 60% (B) or Weighted Score Average (WSA) of 60%.

Eligibility for Admission for M.Sc. Biochemistry

To qualify for admission into the programme, a candidate must possess at least a good Class honours degree in biochemistry from a recognized University. The selection process is based on the quality of academic transcript of the first degree. There may be an interview. A candidate seeking admission must possess five credit passes, including English and Mathematics, and other relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level.

Candidates with MBBS degree and FIML T clinical biochemistry with at least two years post qualification experience may also be considered. These candidates must take some B. Sc. Courses to remedy deficiencies observed in their academic transcripts.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

The relevant provisions of the regulations Governing Higher degrees and diplomas of University of Jos pertaining to Master’s degree primarily by coursework shall apply.

The following are specific to M.Sc. Biochemistry programme. The minimum credit load of taught courses (i.e., courses other than seminar and dissertation) a student can carry per session is 18 credit units and not more than 24 credit units of such courses, in one academic session.

Entry Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics

The candidate for admission into postgraduate diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics programme must be a first-degree holder in relevant disciplines from any recognized University with a minimum of third class or pass with a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience. Such relevant disciplines include Biochemistry, nutrition, medicine, community health, chemistry, microbiology, home economics, nursing, food science and technology. Holders of HND (Upper credit) or HND lower credit with a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience are also eligible. A candidate seeking admission must possess five credit passes, including English and Mathematics, and other relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level.

M.Phil/Ph.D. Biochemistry Programme

        1. GENERAL

The Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Jos offers a doctorate programme of research and course work leading to a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry.

        1. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The candidate for Ph.D. admission must satisfy the following conditions: All candidates must have a minimum of five credit passes at SSCE/GCE O level including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

        1. Candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology from an approved university must obtain a minimum of second-class lower division with a minimum CPGA of 3.0/5 scale.

Candidates must have academic Master’s degree in Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology or equivalent areas with a minimum CGPA of 4.0/5 and thesis score not lower than 60% (B) or WSA of 60%. All candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem-solving potentials.

        1. DURATION OF PROGRAMME

Full time – a minimum of 6 semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters.

        1. REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION

Candidates are to take and pass taught courses of a minimum of 12 credit units including the core courses (BCH 901 and 902). They are also required to offer some courses outside Biochemistry courses, which are: CES 902, SCI 802 and EDU 913.

A doctoral thesis of 12 credit units - including a minimum of four seminar presentations and an oral defense is compulsory.
