The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Sonni Tyoden who said this at the Induction Ceremony of the 23rd set of Medical Doctors, expressed the hope that the new doctors would aim at establishing a good name through exemplary conduct, carriage and comportment.
He urged them to strive to identify with the Alumni body and contribute their quota to the development of the University.
Professor Tyoden used the occasion to advise undergraduates to emulate the exemplary conduct of the newly qualified doctors and apply themselves carefully to the rules and regulations of the University.
He cautioned against examination malpractice, interruption of academic programmes through demonstrations and cultism so that they will become worthy citizens of the future.
The Vice Chancellor acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Dean and staff of the Faculty by ensuring uninterrupted academic programmes in the Faculty and commended them for the introduction of new curricula of studies into the Faculty like the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences at Undergraduate level and Masters in Public Health.
Also speaking at the Ceremony, the Guest Lecturer who is also the Chairman, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr Shima Gyoh spoke about experiences faced by Medical Doctors especially those during internship. He also took a look at the dichotomy in Medical Education and suggested as to the way forward in tackling the internship glut.
Dr. Gyoh regretted that the current environment in Nigeria did not support a profit-oriented Medical College and advised the young doctors not be place priority on their desire to get rich but to strive towards becoming good doctors. He warned that Council will not hesitate to withdraw accreditation from any College whose standards drop below the minimal requirement.
Also speaking, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. A. A. Ibrahim who gave a brief history of the Council, spoke of the Council’s activities, functions and rules and regulations guiding. He wished them the best during their internship.
Earlier, in a welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Innocent Ujah congratulated the newly qualified doctors for overcoming the challenges they faced during their training.
He said the newly qualified Medical Doctors from the UniJos Medical College had satisfied the professional and academic requirements.
The Dean stated that the University of Jos has produced two thousand three hundred and seventy-eight doctors since the inception of the Faculty thereby making a substantial contribution to the nation’s high level manpower needs in the health sector.
Speaking on the challenges faced by the Faculty in recent times, Professor Ujah said restoration of peace and confidence among teaching staff and students, staff promotions face-lift of the Faculty, timely assessment and release of examination results, approval of new programmes as some of the challenges.
Responding on behalf of the graduands, Dr. Dom Precious expressed gratitude to all those who made it possible for them to successfully graduate.
