The ICT Mathematics Team of the Department of Mathematics recently won two awards. The first, from Hewlett Packard (HP) -“Integrating Technologies for Teaching Mathematics in an African University” and the second from the World Bank Assisted, Science and Technology Post Basic Education (STEPB) project of the FGN-“Measuring the Impact of Integrating Technologies for Teaching and Learning in a Nigerian University”. The projects will involve course redesign, materials acquisition and development, student-centered pedagogical training, integrating technologies, replication and impact assessment.Three courses Mth 101; Mth 103 and CS 101 will be redesigned for use in the first phase lasting 12 months. In the second 12-month cycle, replication will extend to courses in each of eight other departments in the faculty of natural sciences. The University of Jos will work, in this second cycle, with the Nigerian ICT Forum for partnership institutions, to make the courses widely available to other Nigerian institutions. What is in it for the Faculty? The faculty will get 2 young mathematicians trained abroad in the use of technology for teaching and learning. Several other younger colleagues from each department will get similar training in the second cycle. The faculty will lead the rest of the university in instituting mentorship in a new exciting area of exploration and specialization in 21st century higher education. It will support the new university e-learning initiative. The faculty will join the worldwide community of “HP Technology for Teaching” (TfT) grant recipients and enjoy a significant number of resources from the HP community. Faculty projects in each discipline will be submitted for awards by HP under the TfT grants and faculty will enjoy publicity world wide as it participates in HP TfT community activities.
