The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. Postgraduate degrees are offered at the masters and doctoral levels in mathematics only. The department in addition, offers mathematical sciences courses to students reading for the mathematics education degree in the Faculty of Education. Ancillary courses in mathematics are available for students in five of the eight faculties of the university. The department (2007) has twenty three academic staff, including five professors. The current head of the department, Professor U.W. Sirisena and two other academics are women. The department has a vibrant staff training program and three young staff are training abroad while several others are pursuing higher degrees at Jos and at other Nigerian universities. An equally vibrant research agenda showcases research activities in the areas of Algebra, Complex Analysis, Computer Science, Functional Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Statistics. In the last academic session, the department had 720 undergraduate students reading for the three degrees it offers in the mathematical sciences and twenty one postgraduate students reading mathematics. The course credit system is in use and students earn 30% of marks for any course through continuous assessment. All undergraduates do a research project and bachelor degrees are classified as: First Class, Second Class Upper, Second Class Lower and Third Class. Students in the computer science program spend the second semester of their third year outside the university and earn 15 credit units for work under the Student Industrial Work Experience for Students (SIWES) program. The Department partners with academics and professional organizations world wide. Staff members have played leadership roles in national and international mathematical associations and societies. The department has a blended E-learning Initiative in partnership with the Carnegie Corporation of New York. HP has recently made a small award to the department as they process a proposal under the 2008 Technology for Teaching Grant Project. This project is expected to be a pilot for another proposal the department has presented to the STEPB World Bank assisted project of the Federal Government of Nigeria. |
