RAINSTORM TO COMMISSION
NEW ADVANCEMENT
OFFICE
The
University of
Jos received a
pat on the back
in September 2005
for establishing
an Advancement
office. The Minister
of Education,
Mrs. Chinwe Obaji,
who performed
the commissioning
of the new office
amidst a heavy
downpour of rain,
said that the
Federal Government
is supportive
of innovations
that will meet
the challenge
of revamping and
repositioning
the educational
system in Nigeria.
“The goal of the
present administration
is to establish
and sustain a
university system
that is adequately
equipped, responsive
and among the
best in the world”
she pledged.
While
commending the
vision and mission
of the University
administration,
the Minister called
on other Nigerian
universities and
tertiary institutions
to emulate the
laudable initiative
of the University

advised university
authorities to
be prudent and
make judicious
use of funds available
to them.
The
purse of the Advancement
office was made
heavier at the
event with a donation
of 1.5 million
Naira, by the
special guest
and Governor of
Nasarawa State,
Alhaji Abdullahi
Adamu, an alumnus
of the university.
Represented by
the Deputy Governor,
Mr. Labaran Maku,
also an alumnus,
the Governor urged
the Federal Government
to direct a fair
percentage of
the excess earning
from crude oil
resources to Nigerian
universities.

state government’s support
towards the progress of
the university.

Monday Mangvwat remarked
that the commissioning
of the Advancement Office
is a dream come true.
He explained that the
University in July 2003
received a 2 million dollar
grant from Carnegie Corporation
of New York, to implement
some projects including
the setting up of an Advancement
Office.
The
colorful ceremony was
witnessed by dignitaries
from all walks of life,
who equally defied the
heavy rain. To spice up
the day, various performing
groups entertained guests.
Not even the heavy down
pour which blew off canopies,
could stop the tape from
being cut and the plaque
unveiled. Cold and wet,
the dignitaries shared
in the joy of the formal
opening of the University
of Jos Advancement Office,
the first of its kind
in Nigeria.
